Megaport
A self-service network-as-a-service platform that connects data centers to AWS, Azure, Google, Oracle and other clouds over private virtual circuits, in 1,200+ enabled locations. We pair it with a last-mile fiber circuit from your office or cage.
The short answer
Megaport is not a last-mile carrier. It is a software-defined network in 1,200+ data centers where you buy a physical Port (1, 10 or 100 Gbps), then spin up Virtual Cross Connects (VXCs) to AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle, IBM and Alibaba from a portal, usually in minutes. Terms run from no minimum to 60 months, and speeds can change mid-term. Advertised starting prices are US$615 a month for data center to cloud and US$780 for cloud to cloud (as advertised, October 2026). You still need a circuit from your building to a Megaport-enabled data center, which is the part we quote.

What Megaport offers
Megaport sells interconnection as software. The building blocks:
Port. A physical connection into Megaport's switch in an enabled data center, at 1, 10 or 100 Gbps. After you order it, Megaport issues a Letter of Authorization (LOA) that you give the data center operator to run the cross connect. Ports at diversity-capable sites are assigned to a red or blue zone on physically separate devices.
Virtual Cross Connect (VXC). A Layer 2 private circuit from your Port to a cloud, another Port, or a service provider. Megaport prices VXCs by distance (metro, zone or interzone), speed and term, and lets you raise or lower speed without re-terming.
Megaport Cloud Router (MCR). A virtual Layer 3 router in the Megaport fabric, from 1 to 100 Gbps tiers, that routes between clouds without any hardware of yours in the path.
Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE). Virtual SD-WAN and firewall appliances hosted on the fabric.
Megaport Internet. Internet access delivered over a VXC to a Port, MCR, MVE or NAT Gateway, from 20 Mbps to several Gbps in 1 Mbps steps, with optional Layer 3 and Layer 4 DDoS protection.
Internet exchange (MegaIX), storage and compute. Peering, S3-compatible object, block and file storage, and compute options sold on the same platform.
For AWS specifically, Megaport supports hosted connections (dedicated bandwidth, up to 25 Gbps per VXC, Transit Gateway supported), hosted virtual interfaces (shared Port bandwidth, up to 5 Gbps) and cross connects to your own dedicated Direct Connect port.
Where they are strongest
Multicloud and hybrid cloud. One Port reaches every major cloud, and MCR routes cloud to cloud without hairpinning through your data center.
Speed of change. New VXCs and speed changes happen in the portal or API, not through a carrier order cycle.
Data center to data center. Private Layer 2 between colocation sites for replication and disaster recovery, priced by distance.
Flexible terms. No-minimum-term options let you test a design before committing.
How we quote them
We are a Megaport partner, so we can quote and order Megaport for clients. We treat it as the cloud layer of a design, never as the whole answer. A typical quote has three parts:
The last mile. A dedicated fiber circuit or wavelength from your office or campus to the nearest Megaport-enabled facility, quoted from every carrier that serves both ends. This is usually the long-lead item.
The cross connect. If your equipment is already in a colocation facility with Megaport, a cross connect from your cage to the Megaport Port. Megaport's terms put cross connect costs on the customer, so we price it with the data center.
The Megaport services. Port, VXCs and any MCR, quoted on the term that fits your plans.
We then compare that against a carrier that delivers the cloud connection itself, for example a carrier cloud connect product bundled with the access circuit. See Megaport vs a carrier for AWS Direct Connect.

Alternatives
When another carrier fits better
You need internet at an office, not cloud interconnect. Megaport lives in data centers. For a site internet circuit, start with Lumen, Zayo, Verizon Business or Comcast Business.
One cloud, one region, and the carrier is already in the building. Some carriers that are AWS or Azure connectivity partners can deliver the access and the cloud connection together, on one contract with one party to call. We ask AT&T Business, Lumen and Verizon Business whether they offer it at your address.
Dark fiber or wavelengths between your own sites. Megaport sells virtual circuits, not physical fiber. For dark fiber or waves, we quote transport carriers such as Zayo and FiberLight.
Managed multi-site networks with cloud attached. Momentum bundles AWS Direct Connect and Azure ExpressRoute with managed SD-WAN across many sites.
Contract notes
From Megaport's Global Services Agreement and product documentation:
Terms. VXCs and Megaport Internet are available on no minimum term, or 12, 24, 36, 48 or 60 months. 12 months is the default. Longer terms lower the monthly rate.
Renewal. Minimum term renewal can renew a term automatically at the same price and length. Megaport emails one month before a term ends. If a term ends without renewal, the service rolls to month-to-month at standard rates.
Early termination. Cancelling a termed service owes 100% of the greater of your average monthly spend or the monthly recurring charge, times the months remaining. The fee can be waived if you replace a Port with one of equal or greater charge and term, with notice within 30 days and the replacement done within 120 days.
Service levels. Port, VXC and MCR each carry a 100% service availability target. Megaport Internet carries a 99.5% monthly packet delivery target. Credits are pro rata to downtime, capped at 100% of that service's charge for the period, applied to your Megaport account only, and must be claimed within 30 days after the billing period.
Cloud charges are separate. AWS bills its own Direct Connect port-hour and data transfer charges on hosted connections. For example, AWS lists a 1 Gbps hosted connection at $0.33 per hour and data transfer out from US regions at $0.02 per GB.
Cross connects. The data center's cross connect fee is the customer's cost.

Frequently asked questions
What is Megaport?
Megaport is a network-as-a-service platform. You buy a Port in one of its 1,200+ enabled data centers and create private virtual connections to clouds, other data centers and service providers from a portal or API. It does not deliver internet to your office building.
How much does Megaport cost?
Megaport advertises data center to cloud from US$615 a month, cloud to cloud from US$780 and a virtual connectivity hub from US$885 (as advertised, October 2026). VXC prices depend on distance, speed and term. Your cloud provider bills its own port and data transfer charges on top.
Do I still need a carrier if I use Megaport?
Yes, unless your equipment already sits in a Megaport-enabled data center. You need a circuit from your building to that facility, and usually a cross connect inside it. That last mile is often the longest lead time in the project.
How does Megaport connect to AWS Direct Connect?
Three ways: a hosted connection with dedicated bandwidth up to 25 Gbps, a hosted virtual interface that shares your Port's bandwidth up to 5 Gbps, or a cross connect to a dedicated Direct Connect port you order from AWS. Hosted connections support Transit Gateway; hosted virtual interfaces do not.
What SLA does Megaport offer?
Megaport's Global Services Agreement sets a 100% availability target for Ports, VXCs and the Megaport Cloud Router, and a 99.5% monthly packet delivery target for Megaport Internet. Credits are pro rata to downtime and capped at the monthly charge for that service.
Can I change Megaport bandwidth during a contract?
Yes. VXC speeds can go up or down during a term without re-terming. Port speed is fixed, so size the Port for growth.
Is Megaport cheaper than a carrier cloud connect?
It depends on how many clouds and regions you need. Megaport tends to win when you connect to several clouds or change bandwidth often; a carrier bundle can win for one cloud in one region. See Megaport vs a carrier for AWS Direct Connect.
How do I make a Megaport connection redundant?
Order two Ports in different diversity zones (red and blue) and run separate VXCs, ideally to diverse cloud ports. Then make sure the last-mile circuits into the data center do not share a path. See Your backup circuit is probably on the same fiber path.
